Lumibricks Midnight Haunted Mansion – A Hauntingly Good Build
Lumibricks Midnight Haunted Mansion – A Hauntingly Good Build
I've built and reviewed quite a few Lumibricks models now, and one thing I've come to appreciate about the company is its willingness to explore different themes and architectural styles. The Midnight Haunted Mansion L9092 is another example of that creativity, taking us away from more traditional modular buildings and into something altogether darker.
And I have to say, this is quite a substantial model.
With its imposing gothic architecture, deep red and black colour scheme, integrated lighting and numerous hidden features, the Midnight Haunted Mansion certainly makes an impression. It's a building that immediately catches your attention, and the closer you look, the more there is to discover.
Halloween is a theme that lends itself particularly well to brick building. There are so many opportunities for unusual architecture, clever techniques and unexpected little details, and Lumibricks have clearly embraced that here.
But does the finished mansion live up to its appearance? More importantly, is it an enjoyable model to build, and does it justify its £129.00 price tag?
Let's take a closer look.
Building Experience
The building experience was excellent. For a model of this size, one of the things I particularly appreciated was the pacing. There was very little repetition, and rather than spending long periods working on similar sections, I constantly found myself moving between different parts of the mansion.
I liked that enormously. It kept things fresh and meant I was always interested in what came next.
There are also plenty of those little moments of delight that I always appreciate in a building set. Hidden walls, unusual mechanisms and all manner of spooky features are gradually introduced as the mansion takes shape. There's a real sense of discovery, and I found myself regularly stopping to appreciate another clever little detail or unexpected feature.
What made these moments particularly enjoyable was the quality of the design and the building techniques employed. I was genuinely excited by some of the solutions the designers had come up with. There were numerous occasions when I found myself admiring not just how something looked, but how cleverly it had been constructed.
That's something I particularly enjoy about this hobby. It's one thing to follow instructions and watch a model come together, but quite another to find yourself genuinely impressed by how the designer has achieved something.
It's also worth emphasising just how substantial this model is. The mansion has a considerable footprint, with an enormous amount of detail packed into it. Despite its size, very little feels wasted, and there's something interesting to discover almost everywhere you look.
I thoroughly enjoyed building this one. The variety, clever techniques and constant little surprises made the experience entertaining throughout.
Building Experience: 8.5/10
Brick Quality
At this point, I think Lumibricks have firmly established themselves when it comes to brick quality. I've built enough of their models now to have a pretty good understanding of what to expect, and they continue to impress me.
The quality is genuinely outstanding. In fact, short of having their bricks manufactured by LEGO themselves, I'm not entirely sure what more Lumibricks could realistically do to improve things.
Excellent designs are one thing, but they need to be supported by equally good materials, and Lumibricks have clearly made this a priority.
There's a consistency to their products that gives me confidence whenever I start another of their sets. It's something I've come to appreciate more and more as I've worked my way through their catalogue.
Simply put, the brick quality is exceptional, and I have very little to criticise.
Brick Quality: 9.0/10
Instructions
Lumibricks continue to impress me with the quality of their instructions, and the Midnight Haunted Mansion is no exception.
The instruction manual is excellent. Large, clear and easy to follow, with a logical progression that makes the entire building experience feel intuitive.
Despite the size and complexity of the mansion, I never found myself struggling to understand what was required or questioning how a particular section should come together.
Colour differentiation was straightforward, the illustrations were accurate, and the individual building stages were clearly defined. Everything was easy to follow, even when the construction became more involved.
The lighting installation was equally straightforward. This is something Lumibricks have become particularly good at, and once again, the process felt remarkably simple.
Sometimes you just have to trust the process.
There were stages where the lighting installation might not immediately make sense, but following the instructions brings everything together exactly as intended. It's an approach that works, and one I've become increasingly comfortable with when building Lumibricks models.
I genuinely have very little to criticise here. The instructions are clear, accurate and reliable.
Exactly what I've come to expect from Lumibricks.

Exterior Design
The exterior of the Midnight Haunted Mansion is quite spectacular.
I've already mentioned the substantial footprint, but it's worth emphasising just how much of a visual impact the finished building makes.
It really does pack a punch.
The colour palette is particularly striking. Deep reds and blacks dominate the architecture, creating a wonderfully gothic appearance that feels perfectly suited to the haunted mansion theme. It's a beautiful combination, and one that immediately draws your attention.
What I particularly appreciate, however, is the lack of uniformity.
As you move around the mansion, the architecture constantly changes. There are variations in the brick masonry, clever examples of greebling and an impressive amount of texture throughout the exterior walls.
Nothing feels repetitive or unnecessarily symmetrical.
Cracks, holes and sections of deteriorating masonry have been incorporated into the design, giving the building a wonderful sense of age and neglect. I love this sort of detailing. It makes the mansion feel like an old building that has been left to deteriorate rather than something constructed yesterday and decorated for Halloween.
The roof design is another highlight. The various cutaways break up the roofline and add further character to an already interesting structure. There's a lovely mixture of shapes and angles, and the result is a building that looks interesting from practically every direction.
I also particularly like the windows. Their contrasting white frames really stand out against the darker exterior, providing some much-needed visual contrast without detracting from the overall atmosphere.
The external lighting adds another dimension, accentuating the architecture and making the building even more striking when illuminated.
There's an enormous amount to take in visually, and the more you examine the exterior, the more you begin to appreciate the smaller details.
Rather than relying on a handful of obvious spooky decorations, Lumibricks have allowed the architecture itself to establish much of the atmosphere.
It's a genuinely beautiful design and something of a visual feast.
Exterior Design: 8.5/10
Interior Design
The interior of the Midnight Haunted Mansion is every bit as enjoyable to explore as its exterior.
There's a tremendous amount of detail throughout, and I was particularly impressed by the individual room designs. The furniture and smaller decorative elements are beautifully done, with some really creative uses of otherwise ordinary pieces.
I particularly enjoyed the way elements have been used to represent bedding and tablecloths. These might seem like relatively insignificant details, but they're exactly the sort of thing I enjoy discovering when building a model.
It's those little touches that make a room feel complete.
The detailing really stands out, and each space has its own character. Rather than simply filling the rooms with furniture, there's clearly been some thought given to how the various elements work together.
And then, of course, there are the surprises.
Hidden doors, secret access points and various spooky features are scattered throughout the mansion. I'm deliberately not going to explain too much about these because I think discovering them for yourself is part of the enjoyment.
Suffice to say, there are some genuinely clever ideas here.
What I like is that the interior doesn't rely entirely on those features to make it interesting. Even without them, the individual rooms are attractive, detailed and enjoyable to explore.
It's a lovely interior, with plenty of character and some particularly nice examples of creative parts usage.
Interior Design: 8.0/10
Lighting
Lighting has always been one of Lumibricks' strengths, and the Midnight Haunted Mansion is another good example of how effective it can be when it suits the model.
And here, it absolutely suits the theme.
The lighting works particularly well in the darker areas of the mansion, helping to create the sort of atmosphere you'd expect from a haunted building.
I especially enjoyed the glowing lights, furnace and fire. These are lovely little additions, and the illumination brings them to life beautifully.
The contrast between the illuminated areas and the darker surroundings is particularly effective. Rather than simply making everything brighter, the lighting adds warmth in some places and a more sinister atmosphere in others.
There's also a good distribution of lighting throughout the building, with plenty of areas benefiting from its inclusion.
I've said before that I appreciate lighting when it genuinely enhances a model rather than simply being included because it's possible.
The Midnight Haunted Mansion gets that balance right.
It's atmospheric, appropriate to the theme and adds considerably to the finished appearance.
Lighting: 8.0/10
Mechanical Features
I've mentioned previously that I'm not always the biggest fan of mechanical features in building sets, particularly when they feel unnecessary or have been included simply to add another selling point.
However, I really enjoyed what Lumibricks have done here.
The moving walls work particularly well, adding another layer of intrigue to a building that's already packed with hidden surprises.
The moving floor is another impressive feature and probably one of my favourites. It's a clever mechanism, and I really enjoyed seeing how it had been incorporated into the structure.
What impressed me just as much, however, was the quality of the various opening sections.
Everything feels reassuringly steady, firm and solid.
That's particularly important with a model of this size. I've encountered buildings in the past where opening sections can feel a little fragile or awkward, but I didn't experience that here.
The mechanisms work well, and the opening sections feel secure when handled.
More importantly, the features actually suit the mansion. They add to the sense of mystery and provide something a little different without dominating the design.
For someone who doesn't generally get particularly excited about mechanical features, I found these surprisingly enjoyable.
Mechanical Features: 8.0/10
Display Appeal
The Midnight Haunted Mansion is a seriously impressive display piece.
Its substantial footprint, striking gothic architecture and atmospheric lighting combine to create something that immediately commands attention.
As a Halloween decoration, it's absolutely fantastic.
The dark colours, deteriorating masonry, unusual roofline and illuminated details give it a wonderfully spooky appearance. It's the sort of model that could easily become the centrepiece of a Halloween display.
There is, however, one important consideration. It's enormous.
You're going to need a considerable amount of space to display this properly. It's certainly not something you can casually squeeze onto an already crowded shelf, and I suspect that could be an issue for some collectors.
Of course, the size is also part of what makes the mansion so impressive, so I wouldn't necessarily consider it a design flaw.
It's simply something worth thinking about before purchasing.
There's also the seasonal nature of the model. While I can certainly appreciate it throughout the year, its greatest appeal will probably be to collectors who particularly enjoy Halloween or gothic architecture.
For those people, I think it's a fantastic display piece.
Just make sure you've got somewhere to put it!
Display Appeal: 7.5/10
Value for Money
At £129.00, I think the Midnight Haunted Mansion represents outstanding value for money.
Consider what you're getting.
A substantial, beautifully detailed mansion, integrated lighting, clever mechanical features and some excellent architectural design.
And that's before you consider everything else included.
We also have three minifigures, a brick-built ghost and a car, all of which help bring the Halloween theme together.
I particularly appreciate these additional elements because they make the set feel like a complete scene rather than simply a standalone building.
There's a lot here for the money.
The mansion itself is substantial, the building experience is thoroughly enjoyable, the brick quality is excellent and there's plenty to explore once construction is complete.
Lumibricks have developed a reputation for delivering impressive models at competitive prices, and I think this is another good example.
At £129.00, it's difficult to argue with what's being offered.
Value for Money: 8.5/10
Final Scores
I thoroughly enjoyed the Midnight Haunted Mansion.
What stood out to me wasn't simply the size of the finished model or the impressive gothic architecture, although both are certainly worth appreciating. It was the amount of enjoyment I got from actually building it. The delight moments.
There's a real sense of discovery throughout the construction, with clever techniques, unusual details and unexpected little surprises that kept me interested from beginning to end.
I particularly enjoyed the variety. For such a substantial model, the building experience rarely felt repetitive, and there were numerous occasions when I stopped to admire something the designers had achieved.
The exterior is beautiful, the interior is packed with character, and the lighting complements the Halloween theme wonderfully.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the mechanical features. They're not usually something I place a huge amount of importance on, but here they work, and I particularly appreciated how solid the various moving and opening sections felt.
Of course, this isn't necessarily a model for everyone.
Its considerable size means you'll need plenty of display space, and the Halloween theme makes it a fairly specific addition to a collection. I suspect those two considerations will be the biggest deciding factors for some people.
But if you enjoy gothic architecture, Halloween displays or simply building something a little different, there's an enormous amount to appreciate here.
And at £129.00, I think the value is excellent.
More than anything, this is a model that reminded me why I enjoy building in the first place. I love discovering interesting techniques, appreciating clever parts usage and watching a designer's ideas gradually come together.
The Midnight Haunted Mansion gave me plenty of those moments.
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
A beautifully detailed, thoroughly enjoyable haunted mansion with some excellent design work and plenty of surprises. Just make sure you've got the space for it!
