The Lumibricks Central Train Station is a substantial model in every sense. With 4,355 pieces, 20 numbered stages, 75 printed elements, eight minifigures and extensive integrated lighting, it asks for a serious commitment of time, money and display space.

A train station is not a theme I would ordinarily choose, and the opening half of the build tested my patience. My experience changed considerably as the model developed. What began as a marathon eventually became far more rewarding, culminating in an imposing centrepiece with one of the most beautiful lighting displays Lumibricks has produced.

Packaging and First Impressions

First impressions matter with any unboxing, and Lumibricks always delivers. The box is beautiful, the three instruction manuals are excellent, and everything has a genuine premium feel from the moment you open it.

My only issue is the number of bags assigned to each stage. The set may be divided into 20 numbered stages, but many require three or more separate bags. Because of the sheer volume involved, those 20 stages can feel more like 50.

I would love Lumibricks to streamline this system so that each stage is contained within a single bag wherever possible. It would make a model of this size easier to organise and far less daunting at the beginning.

The Build

The first ten stages felt like a marathon and didn’t provide as many of the rewarding little moments I normally associate with Lumibricks.

Some of that is undoubtedly personal. A railway station was never going to excite me as immediately as some of the company’s other themes. Personal taste and product quality are not the same thing, however, and there is no question about the quality on display here.

The experience changed during the second half. Lumibricks began rewarding my patience with the delightful construction moments I initially felt were missing. Completing the ornate station roof was a major turning point, while the removable walls and insertable floors made the later stages much more engaging.

What began as a demanding build gradually developed into something I felt far more positive about. It asks for patience, particularly during the first half, but any model containing more than 4,000 pieces is going to require a certain level of commitment.

There is nothing especially complicated about the construction. The clear standout is the ornate glass-and-cast-iron-style train hall. The combination of transparent panels and dark-brown framework works beautifully, recreating the appearance of Victorian ironwork. Watching the entire roof come together is genuinely impressive.

Somewhat embarrassingly, my favourite individual moment was assembling the toilets attached to the detachable wall of the main hall. It is a small feature, but it is beautifully designed and executed. The ticket-office wall within the main hall is equally impressive. Both appear later in the process and help explain why the second half feels considerably more rewarding.

The construction and installation of the train platforms are also particularly enjoyable. They transform the individual sections into a complete and convincing railway environment.

The included tracks are excellent and identical in every practical way to those supplied by other major brick-building companies. They connect and function exactly as expected, allowing the station to be incorporated into an existing railway layout without compatibility concerns.

Design and Accessibility

One of the things I have always appreciated about Lumibricks is its approach to accessibility and playability. Its models are designed so that floors, rooms and interior features remain accessible after construction.

The removable walls, pull-out sections and insertable floors are satisfying little builds in their own right. More importantly, they allow you to explore the finished station rather than simply viewing its exterior.

There is a clear understanding here that a large display model can still be interactive, accessible and enjoyable to investigate.

Brick Quality

Brick quality is excellent. The clutch power, colour consistency and overall finish are all of a very high standard. Lumibricks is so reliable in this area that it is almost no longer worth discussing at length. In practical terms, the only noticeable difference is the absence of the LEGO logo on the studs.

The quality creates confidence as you build. Connections feel secure, structures remain stable, and the completed model has the strength required for something of this size.

I also appreciate that Lumibricks appears to be moving further away from relying on proprietary pieces. Apart from the specialist lighting components and the custom elements used to conceal them, the model works within the standard building-block system using recognisable, conventional parts.

The result feels like an authentic brick-built creation rather than a model dependent on large, specialised components.

Printed Pieces

Wow. Wow. Wow. The number of printed pieces is considerable, and there isn’t a single sticker anywhere in the set. The printing is crisp, the colours are beautiful, and the pieces add character throughout the station.

This is an area in which Lumibricks consistently sets itself apart. Printing is the way forward, and the company has mastered it to a remarkably high standard.

These pieces do more than replace stickers. They feel like carefully designed elements that enhance the appearance, quality and longevity of the model.

Lighting

The lighting is amazing and feels like a genuine step up from previous Lumibricks sets. That may be due more to the architecture of the station than to the individual lights, but the finished effect is truly beautiful.

Every area glows exactly as you would expect a grand railway station to glow. The warm illumination complements the glass and ornate framework, revealing the building’s architectural character without overwhelming it.

Flashing railway signals add movement and atmosphere, while the illuminated platform and track section is particularly impressive. The effect is difficult to capture properly on camera, but in person it is easily one of the model’s strongest features.

This is a set where lighting is essential to the finished experience. The station is impressive in daylight, but switching on the lights reveals its warmth and atmosphere in a way the bricks alone cannot achieve.

For me, the lighting made the set.

The Missing Train

The one addition that might have tipped the balance completely would have been a working train.

The included railway maintenance vehicle is a welcome feature. It is an enjoyable little build, works perfectly well within the scene and gives the tracks some activity. After constructing a station of this scale, however, it is difficult not to want to place an actual train inside it.

A functioning passenger train would have completed the experience and made the station feel truly alive. The maintenance vehicle is nice to have; I simply found myself wishing it were a train.

Price and Value

The price is higher than we usually see from Lumibricks, but this is also one of the company’s largest and most ambitious models.

With more than 4,000 pieces, extensive integrated lighting, 75 printed elements, eight minifigures and a substantial finished footprint, there is an enormous amount included in the box.

Compared with similarly sized models from other brick-building companies, the Central Train Station still offers exceptional value for money. It requires a greater initial investment, but the scale, brick quality, absence of stickers and impact of the finished display make the price easy to justify.

The individual scores reflect a model whose finished appearance surpasses the experience of building it. The opening stages require patience, but the architecture, printing and exceptional lighting elevate the completed station considerably.

Final Thoughts

The Central Train Station will look amazing in almost any brick-built city. It will feel particularly at home in a Lumibricks city, especially when the entire display is illuminated at night.

Its scale, architecture and lighting give it a commanding presence. Once completed and switched on, it becomes a genuine centrepiece around which an entire city can be built.

This is a model that demands commitment at the beginning and delivers its reward at the end. The first half tested my patience, while the second reminded me why Lumibricks sets can be so satisfying.

This was not my favourite Lumibricks journey, but it is an undeniably impressive destination.
