Lumibricks Steampunk Memory Magic Shop Review: Gears, glow, and a confident step forward

Overview & First Impressions

As I started this build, a couple of questions kept coming back to me.

Has the quality changed again… or is it just me?
Has the lighting changed… or is it just me?

Lumibricks have always delivered solid, well-priced sets with strong themes and integrated lighting, but almost immediately the Steampunk Memory Magic Shop felt different. Not dramatically so — nothing that jumps out in the first few minutes — but enough that it made me stop and pay attention. This felt like familiar territory, yet subtly refined.

At its core, this is still very much a Lumibricks modular: rich steampunk styling, strong architectural presence, and lighting baked into the design. But as the build progressed, it began to feel less like another variation and more like a natural evolution.

LUMIBRICKS are not some alternative- they are established in their own right. Im glad to see them enter the market with such quality and fun.

Build Experience

The build experience here is excellent.

From start to finish, I loved the way this set pulls together. Every section feels like it belongs, and there’s a real sense of momentum as the building takes shape. Nothing feels wasted or repetitive, and the experience remains engaging all the way through.

One of the standout elements is the modularity within the modular. Being able to remove the back wall, explore the interior, and then reattach it without any awkwardness works exceptionally well. Everything fits securely back into place, which gives you confidence to actually interact with the model rather than treating it as something fragile.

It’s a build that feels well considered and genuinely enjoyable — not just something to get through on the way to the finished display.

Brick Quality & Design Evolution

This is the first Lumibricks set where I genuinely started to notice a difference in brick quality between designs. Now, I’ll say this upfront — I may just be imagining it. Familiarity with a brand can make subtle changes feel bigger than they are.

That said, as the Magic Shop came together, it became increasingly hard to ignore the feeling that something had improved.

Lumibricks have always been good. Brick clutch has never been an issue, and previous sets have felt reliable and consistent. But here, the bricks felt more refined in the hand. Connections were confident without being overly tight, tolerances felt cleaner, and the overall build experience felt smoother from start to finish. It wasn’t a single moment — it was the consistency of that feeling across the entire build.

Alongside that, the design language feels more mature. Assemblies are cleaner, decorative details feel properly integrated, and there’s a sense of confidence in how everything is put together. If earlier sets hinted at potential, this one feels like evidence of refinement.

Design, Theme & Atmosphere

Visually, this is a beautiful set.

The steampunk aesthetic is handled with restraint. Gears, mechanical elements, and Victorian architectural cues are everywhere, but they never overwhelm the structure. The building feels cohesive, layered, and full of subtle detail.

It would look fantastic as part of a brick-built city, standing out just enough without clashing with more traditional modular buildings. Even unlit, it has presence.

Lighting – Outstanding and Purposeful

The lighting in this set is outstanding.

Lumibricks have always done lighting well, but this feels like a genuine step forward. The lighting here is more nuanced, detailed, and purposeful than in previous sets. It isn’t just about making the building glow — it’s about shaping the atmosphere.

Different areas are lit at different intensities, drawing the eye naturally and giving the structure depth. Warm interior lighting, subtle highlights, and carefully placed illumination make the model feel alive once switched on.

This is also what makes the set great for both display and play. The lighting kit transforms the model and makes it feel active, especially in a city layout after dark. Quite simply, the lighting doesn’t just enhance the build — it defines it.

Minifigures – A Personal Drawback

A drawback for me — and it remains a consistent one — is the minifigures. In my opinion, they are the weakest part of Lumibricks sets, and I really don’t like them. Lumibricks isnt alone in this area, other non-traditional building blocks sets also miss the mark.

That said, they clearly have their fans, and from that point of view it makes sense that Lumibricks continue to include them. For those who enjoy figures and character-driven scenes, they’ll add value. For me, the set works far better as an architectural and atmospheric display piece.

Final Thoughts

The Steampunk Memory Magic Shop is a strong release from Lumibricks and feels like another step forward.

The build experience is excellent, the design is beautiful, and the lighting is not just good — it’s outstanding. Add to that an accessible price point and consistently solid quality, and it’s easy to see why Lumibricks sets continue to score highly.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

The minifigures let it down for me, as they always do, but everything else lands exactly where it should. As a display piece, a city addition, or simply a rewarding build, this is an easy recommendation — and a very encouraging sign of where Lumibricks are heading next.
