A Flight of Fancy
The Hummingbird at $79.99 is amazing. This little bird has been perched patiently on my desk—ready for takeoff. This is my first JMBricklayer build, and I was sent this free by the company to do an honest review.
First Impressions: A Neon Feathered Wonder
When I first cracked the box, I found a ton of numbered bags waiting for me. The LED-infused components gleamed like the future in miniature. The hummingbird has a serious cyberpunk aesthetic—part artifact, part neon dream. I half-expected it to hum back at me. Sadly, there are no moving mechanics—it’s strictly a static sculpture, but one that glows with personality.
Building Journey: Wins and Woes
This is no lazy Sunday build. It takes time and care to assemble. The alignment is delicate, the pieces demand precision, and sometimes a little grit—and sometimes stubborn force—to snap into place. The instructions are clear once you get used to them, though I’ll admit I made a few mistakes along the way.
Once assembled, it’s stunning—if you don’t move it. And oh, you will resist, because it’s charming. But word to the wise: the bird attaches lightly to its base, and shifting it can lead to a collapse. My own took a minor dive, and I spent a couple of hours reassembling, sipping coffee, and questioning my life choices—until it lit up again.
Display Tip: See Both Sides—or Don’t
Each side of this hummingbird has its own personality. If you don’t rotate it, you miss the full show. But rotating… well, see the previous paragraph. I compromised by placing it on a lazy Susan. Spin it when guests are present, and bask in their confused delight.
The Final Verdict: A Decorative Delight (with a Warning Label)
Yes, it’s finicky. Yes, it’s fragile. But when that LED glow cascades over the bird’s delicate contours? Perfection. It becomes a conversation starter (“Is that… alive?”), a miniature art piece, a soft nightlight—and for a brief moment, magic.
Would I build it again? Maybe not (reassembly is no joke). But do I love it? Absolutely.
It’s a beautiful mesh of nature and cyber. Overall, a nice little build that I’m glad to have on display.
Star Rating: 4.2/5 — minus a bit for structural fragility, plus for sheer visual and emotional payoff.
